LEGEND OF ZELDA
BOOK II OF THE HYRULE TERMINUS SAGA
DEATH MOUNTAIN
CHAPTER III
FIRE IN THE HOLE

The group walked through the mines, looking at the petrified Gorons that filled the halls. Link muttered, “I don't think they expected this would happen when they woke up this morning.” Navi muttered, “Would you?” Shadow sighed and said, “Will the two of you knock it off? You've been at each others throats for longer than I care to put up with right now.” Saria looked at the Gorons and said, “This is horrible. How could it do this to so many Gorons?” Sheik examined one of them closely and said, “Too easily, I'm afraid. I hope it's not anywhere down here.”

Shadow stopped at a door and said, “Push or pull?” Sheik glanced at the door and said, “Locked.” Saria sighed. “Great. Now what?” Sheik started to walk back the way they came. “Hey! Where do you think you're going?” Without answering, he continued a fair distance away from the door and came to a stop, pulling the iron boots out of his bag.” Link sighed. “What's going through his head right now?” Shadow shrugged. “Wind, probably...” Flint said with a chuckle, “He's been handing around Dilt for too long.”

Suddenly, the Elf stood up, boots strapped in place. “Oh no... He isn't...” The warrior then went into a full dash towards the door. The others quickly moved out of his way as he picked up speed. As he neared the door, he leaped into the air and slammed both his feet into the obstruction, breaking it clean out of the wall. He landed on the ground and skidded to a stop. The three remaining elves looked in the room as the fourth casually dusted his tunic. Link said in a stunned voice, “I'm not so sure I want to wind up on his bad side...” the others nodded their agreement.

Sheik sighed. “Oi! What's keeping you?” The others prepared to enter the room when grated doors fell from the roof, preventing them from regrouping. He looked at the bombs and said, “Hold on. I'll just blast that thing and we can get on our way.” He picked up a bag of bombs and prepared to breach the gate when the room shook violently. A large iron statue fell from ceiling and swung a massive blade where he stood. The warrior rolled out of the way and smiled. “Well,” he chirped. “And here I thought I was going to get bored in this place.”

The statue prepared to attack and Sheik smiled as he took a fighting stance. Shadow muttered, “He looks like he was hoping this would happen.” Saria groaned and muttered, “That idiot. How does he plan to fight that thing?” In the room, the metal creature slashed at the elf, who easily jumped over the attack and pressed his feet against the wall. Pushing off with immense force, he kicked it in the head, bringing it crashing to the ground. He laughed and said, “Too easy.”

At that moment, the monster got to it's feet and roared. In a slightly panicked voice, “Yeah, definitely too easy.” Monster gave chase and the elf ran up the wall to the best of his abilities, then pushed off, soaring towards the monster's head again. Shadow yelled, “He already tried that! If it didn't work the first time...” Link smiled and said, “Don't worry. He has a plan.”

The warrior landed on top of the monstrosity's head and raised his fist. In a mighty blow, a loud crack could be heard. Saria, Link and Shadow all muttered, “That sounded painful....” The warrior shook his hand violently and stood up. Raising his foot above his head, he snapped it down with all his might. The sound of metal crushing metal brought a look of success to his face just a second before he was thrown to the ground. He landed hard and rolled too a stop.

Thinking quickly, he saw platforms that could be used to his advantage. He ran at one of the lower shelves and managed to leap over another of the monster's attacks. He continued jumping platforms and ran across poles leading to even higher locations. With a mighty leap, he grabbed a post and somersaulted to the next, and then another before reaching the highest platform. He ran at the monster and leaped high over another attack, once again coming to a stop on it's head. Grabbing one of the bombs and striking the fuse, he tossed it into the tear, yelling, “Fire in the hole!!!”

Jumping off, an explosion destroyed a section of the helmet on the iron giant. Groaning, he yelled, “Let's see if you can stand another!” Looking at the damaged platforms, he looked to the side and smiled. Running in an arching pattern, he picked up a length of rope and ducked into a concealed area. Tying a hook shaped piece of metal to the end, he said, “Mario ain't got nothing on me.” He ran out of the hiding place and threw the hook at a large broken cage that seemed to be where the monster had come from. Latching on, he leaped and swung to a high wall and pushed off, soaring at the creature. Landing on it's head, he readied another bomb and tossed it into the gaping hole in it's damaged armor.

Leaping to the ground, he shouted, “Let's see you survive THAT!!!” The bomb went off, destroying more of the armor, but not killing the creature. “Dammit!” Sheik yelled. “I was being SARCASTIC!!!” The creature slashed at him and almost made contact. Running he latched onto the cage for one final attempt. This time, the creature was ready. With a swing of the sword, there was no way to evade. He tugged the rope sharply and rose just enough that he only got grazed. He released the rope and landed on the blade. Running along it, he jumped onto the arm, shoulder and head.

In a fit of rage, he lit another bomb, threw it back into the bag and tossed it into the damaged helmet, yelling, “This time, JUST DIE!!!” He jumped off the creature and landed on the ground. All the bombs went off and caused the entire helmet to explode in a ball of flames. Sheik hopped around, celebrating the destruction of the creature when he came to a dead stop. The creature had survived, and it was royally ticked off. “Oh, Come ON!!!” he yelled in frustration. “What does it take to kill this thing?!” An arrow struck the monster in the center of the head and it fell to the ground, dead.

Sheik turned to Link who had his bow in hand. “Showoff!” He yelled. The gate lifted out of the way of the group and they entered the room. Link looked at the grappling hook and said, “Where did you learn to make that?” Sheik smiled and replied, “The Sheikah. Now let's grab as many of these bombs as possible so we won't have to come back here.” As the group each grabbed a bag and filled them with explosives, they heard a voice coming from one of the adjoining rooms.

Walking to the door, Link opened the latch and looked inside. A strange voice said, “Oh good. I'm glad that you are here, Mr. Fairy. Would you be so kind as to open the door?” Link said, “Depends, who, and what are you?” The voice replied, “Oh, ho-ho. Who I am is not important, But If you are going to travel through Death Mountain, Perhaps I can be of some assistance, Hmmm?” Link smiled and said, “We can use all the help we can get.”

As link unlocked the door, Shadow muttered, “That high pitched sound... that gratingly annoying tone of voice. The way he presented to help us... Link! Don't open that door!” It was too late. The door opened and a impish man in green clothes and no fashion sense stepped out of the room. Saria asked, “Is he a criminal?” Shadow shook his head. “Worse. It's a salesman.”
“A map salesman,” the creature beamed. “And you can call me Tingle.”
