BAD EGG
CHAPTER II
OUT OF THE FRYING PAN…
“I am not old fashioned, just old!!!” – Knuckles to Silver during a debate over political issues.
As the group reached the G.U.N. airstrip, sonic said, “Hey, Knux, How long do you think we have before that Island of Mass Destruction crashes into the Earth?” The guardian shook his head and replied, “Maybe a few hours, maybe a few days. It depends on how long the Master Emerald can hold enough power to keep it above fifty thousand feet. If it falls below that, it’ll take a miracle to stop it.” Sonic sarcastically replied, “Luckily there’s a church on the next block. So, Emo boy, what’s the plan?” without saying a word, he ran off with remarkable speed. Shortly, he returned and said, “Okay, when I give a signal, make a break for the aircraft and don’t wait up.”
Amy looked at him and asked, “What’s the signal?”
“You’ll know it when you see it. Now go.” The group headed to the insertion point without question and sonic muttered, “He’d better keep it low key.” At that moment, a soldier yelled, “Put your hands in the air and don’t make any sudden moves!” the group watched as Shadow raised his hands above his head. He was holding some device and Sonic muttered, “That does not look very reassuring.” at that moment, large explosions rocked the base and Sonic yelled, “You’ve got to be kidding me!!!” Knuckles replied, “Shut up and just run!”
The group made a break for the hangar where the prototypes were being kept and ran inside. They were shortly met by Shadow, who had a rather unnerving smile on his face. The blue haired teen muttered, “You enjoyed that way to much. Now what?” Tails shrugged and said, “Not much we can do. We each take a jet and pray they don’t have any Nikita’s or anti-aircraft artillery on the base.” Everyone entered their own craft and put on a communication headset. After taking a good look at the controls, Sonic asked, “Okay, so where’s the on switch?”
The teen flipped a switch and a automated voice said, “Sidewinder four armed. Disengaging safety locks. Preparing to auto-fire in…” A countdown started and Sonic quickly started mashing buttons and flipping switches until the countdown stopped. Letting out a sigh of relief, he muttered, “Video game my blue armored ass.” Tails said over the headset, “Okay, guys. Don’t flip the activator switches until after takeoff, of they’ll misfire.”
“Now he tells me,” Sonic muttered. Shadow let out a chuckle and said, “What’s the matter, dye job? Push one too many buttons?” Sonic yelled, “Hey! At least I didn’t turn the airstrip into a crater!” Amy suddenly came through, yelling, “Both of you shut up, or I’ll send a sidewinder up your afterburners!” After a moment of silence, Tails said, “Okay, everyone. You’ll find a red box on the left side of the control panel. Open it and flip the switch on it and you’ll be able to use the V.T.O.L. system.” After a moment of silence, he sighed and muttered, “Vertical Take-Off and Landing. You’ll go straight up instead up forward.” After a moment, he continued, “Now, push the throttle slowly, or you’ll…” He was cut off by a loud crashing sound from above and pieces of the ceiling fell to the ground.
“Never mind.” Sonic yelled over the comm, “This way past cool! I can see my house from here. Oh, there’s our school! And a large fleet of… Uh-oh.” as the other fighters gained altitude, Knuckles asked, “What’s wrong?” The blue haired male replied, “It looks like a large fleet of slow moving ships reaching the edge of the city, and they’re not G.U.N. warships.” when the rest of them leveled off with his craft, Shadow said, “It’s the Egg Fleet. Looks like they’re getting ready to strike.” Sonic yelled, “Well, what are we waiting for?” With that, his fighter headed towards the fleet. Tails sighed and said, “So much for making a plan. Let’s go.”
They engaged the fleet, completely oblivious to what they were getting into. The minute they got in range, they were attacked with anti-artillery fire.

On the capital ship, Eggman sat in the command chair and laughed. “Pathetic insects. Do they really think five ships are enough to stop me? My army is invincible. Snively!” The thin, weasely man came to controls and said, “Yes uncle?” The oversized tyrant said, “Have all cannons open fire on those fighters. I want them completely destroyed.” Snively nodded and said, “Yes, oh repugnant one.”

The heroes now found themselves surrounded by a massive army of fighters. They flew in erratic patterns to keep from being shot out of the sky. Shadow yelled, “Happy, Dye job? We should have made a plan of attack! Now we’ve gone out of the frying pan and into the fire.” Sonic replied in an unnervingly cheerful voice, “No, we’re not! At least, not until I do this! Kamikaze!” He turned his fighter to the fleet of warships at top speed. Knuckles yelled, “Great! He’s completely lost it!” they watched as his fighter went on it’s collision course.
Just a few seconds before impact, the teen ejected from the craft and made a slow descent to the capital ship. Shadow said in a rather uncharacteristic manner, “We should follow him.”
“What?” everyone yelled in unison. Shadow changed course and said, “Die on the enemy’s ship or die out here. Personally, I’d rather take my chances on an even playing field.” after a moment, Amy said, “I agree. Let’s go.” With that, the group followed Sonic’s lead to fight on even ground.
