UNDER THE BLAZING SKIES
CHAPTER III
TRAITOR
-“Look, Tails. I already know you’re smart. Now will you stick to one language for your explanation?”
-“Que passa?”
-“And that makes eight.”– Overheard conversation between Amy and Tails
The group continued on their path that would inevitably lead to the creature known as Nazo. Sonic kept close watch for any unexpected attacks, but they didn’t find any for the past two hours. Tails looked at him and said, “Hey, Sonic, Can we please rest for a bit?” The blue haired teen shook his head. “Sorry, Tails. But these creatures are going to keep coming if we don’t reach Nazo. We don’t have time to rest.”
Shadow turned to him and replied, “Look, Ice cap. Tails is right on this one. We haven’t had a rest for the past couple of days. If we don’t camp for at least an hour, there’s really no point in confronting Nazo. We’d be too tired and he’d waste us in a moment.” Sonic looked at his companions for a long moment, then said, “You guys can rest if you want. I’m going forward.” Shadow sighed and gave him a solid blow to the head, rendering the speedy teen unconscious.
The black haired warrior then said, “Now, we rest.”

As night fell under the crimson sky, Tails asked Shadow, “I had no idea the Chaos Emeralds were this powerful. It completely set the sky on fire. Even though is night, you can still see the surroundings clearly.” Shadow shook his head. “Don’t admire it too much. This is the sign of the apocalypse. The fire is releasing high amounts of Chaos Radiation, and it’s slowly killing everything on the planet. When this planet dies, Nazo will simply move on to another.”
Tails looked at him and asked, “How do you know so much about Nazo?” Shadow shrugged and replied, “Same way Sonic does. We were both created by the dark energies of the Chaos Emeralds. However, it looks like sonic got the bigger end of the stick. He has the ability to choose his own destiny. I don’t have that kind of free will. To be honest, I’m kind of jealous of him on that part. I stayed to my nature of weapon and tool, and he became a person. I’d give anything for that freedom.”
Tails smiled and said, “You can be a person. You just have to stop believing that your life was set in stone and make your own decisions. That is how you become a person. You use free will. You break free from what you are supposed to be and make your first free choice. After that, you make another, then another until you begin forming your own destiny. That’s all there is to it.” Shadow stood there for a moment then smiled. “I know exactly what I have to do then. Thanks Tails.”
The young genius smiled and replied, “Glad I could help in some way. I seem to be pretty useless in this battle.” Shadow smiled and said, “Don’t worry. You’ll play a very useful role in beating Nazo. You just don’t know it yet.”

hen Sonic finally regained consciousness in the morning, he looked at Shadow and snapped, “What was the big idea of bashing me in the head, huh?” The black haired warrior looked at him and replied, “Well, it got us some rest, didn’t it? We can’t win this fight if we cant stand, now can we?” The speedy teen let out a string of curses under his breath and said, “Fine. Let’s get going.”
Shadow smiled and said, “Sure. I just have to do one thing before anyone can go anywhere.” Sonic looked at him and asked, “Yeah? What’s that?” Shadow drew a pistol out of it’s resting place and fired the full clip into Tails’ chest. He smiled and said, “I’ll be waiting for you, Sonic.” with that, he vanished into a black gateway that had opened, saying, “Don’t keep us waiting.”
Sonic ran to his lifelong friend and yelled, “Tails! Tails! Get up!” His friend looked at him and said weakly, “Sonic, don’t waste time worrying about me. Just go after Nazo Don’t let us all die for nothing. Just… just beat Nazo.” With that, Tails drew his last breath. Sonic knelt beside his friend and powerful energy surrounded his body. It increased in strength until the ground around him shook violently from the raw power.
The seven Chaos emeralds started to materialize and swirl around him before entering his body. His eyes changed to a translucent green and he looked up to the heavens. “Nazo!” he screamed. “I swear to the heavens and all the Gods who reside within it that I will find you, and I will destroy you to my dying breath. If you have never been afraid even once in your life, Then by the gods, you had better be now!”
Sonic’s armor started to turn black and his eyes became red as the power of Nazo started to form in his body, but not completely take total control. He looked forward and yelled, “Chaos Control!” and vanished. Upon his leaving, the world trembled in anticipation of the battle that would soon come.
